What is the best piece of career advice ever given to you?

I attended a workshop many years ago by author, Neen James. She gave wonderful advice on several topics, such as interviewing skills, building your resume, networking etc. What stood out to me the most is when she explained that we should make appointments with ourselves on the 1st of January every year to reflect on the year that was, and the year that is yet to come. This stood out because it made me realize that one should reflect on their own goals and accomplishments and use them as fuel for the next year. Doing this allows you to start on the right foot and make the coming year better than the last. It also allows you to reflect on any challenges that you may have overcome and made you stronger.

How do you define success?

Success to me means living my life to the fullest and having a positive impact on others. If I have helped someone, made someone smile or laugh, I truly feel accomplished. Lifting others up is so important and success comes to me when I am able to do just that. I live and breathe simple acts of kindness. Every opportunity I get to be kind or make someone’s day, I try to do it. I like to go to bed with a full heart.

In moment of self-doubt, how do you build yourself back up?

In moments of self-doubt, I build myself back up by stating positive affirmations repeatedly in my head. I say them slowly and breathe in between. “I am worthy,” I am beautiful,” I am brave,” I am confident.” I also use uplifting essentials oils to raise my spirits such as orange, lemon and other citrus scents. I sometimes diffuse the scents. If my diffuser is not nearby, I simply take drop, rub them between my palms, and slowly inhale.

What is the biggest lesson you learned in your career to date?

The biggest lesson I learned is that it's okay to challenge yourself and try something new but doing so, doesn't necessarily mean it's the best move. I can speak to this first hand. I am a people-person who loves to plan events, bring people together and make people smile. Most of my career has been in the hospitality field and I recently chose to change career paths a move into a Sales role. In the beginning, it was new and exciting, I was happy to have challenged myself, and to have stepped out of my comfort zone. As time passed, I realized this was not a good fit for me. Moral of the story, it's okay to divert your career path to try something new but it's also ok if it's not a good fit.

What is an accomplishment you are most proud?

I am most proud of my college experience and what I accomplished in the four years that I attended. I graduated with a 3.85 GPA and part of 5 Honor Societies. I was speaker at graduation and one of two students who won an award. I was involved in every way possible in college: Freshmen Experience class mentor, Students at Your Service President, Business Society President, Ecuador Poverty Immersion trip, Habitat for Humanity Alternative Spring Break etc.

All of these experiences shaped me into the caring, compassionate, hardworking person that I am today. To top it all off, I worked two jobs while in college. Normally when a student graduates, they are swimming in debt from student loans, not me! I applied to every scholarship I could and used the money from both jobs to pay for college. I also took two gap years before college with City Year, a nonprofit organization for 17-24 year old individuals who tutor and mentor students in underprivileged areas as well beatification projects in the Philadelphia area. It was this program where my true passion for helping others and giving back started.
