Meet Ashlie Thornbury, Vice President, Partnerships at Campus Philly.

What’s the best piece of career advice ever given to you?

In any given conversation, you should be listening 70% of the time and speaking 30% of the time. If you’re not doing more listening, you’re doing it wrong.

How do you define success?

Accomplishing small goals every day. I picture myself filling up a giant jar of colorful jelly beans. If I try to fill it in one big pour, most of the beans will miss the opening and spill in all directions, but if I add them one bean at a time, eventually my jar will be full. Totally worth the time.

Do you have a quote, song or person that inspires you?

My mother and Michelle Obama. I think about things each of them have done and said through out their lives, both for their families and careers. I use them as spirit guides. Gut checks. Navigation for choppy waters.

In moments of self-doubt, how do you build yourself back up?

I ask myself, what’s the worst case scenario? And then I work backwards from there. Worst case scenarios rarely play out, but identifying what I am really afraid of helps me gain control and think clearly.

What’s your favorite thing about living or working in Philly?

The people. The best kind of people in my opinion. Humble. Funny. A little crazy. Loyal. Gritty. Loving.

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned in your career to date?

Be helpful. Be thoughtful. Be consistent.

Where’s your favorite place to recharge or network in Philly?

The Ritz Carlton lobby, Vernick Café in the new Comcast Center.
